Why write to my MP?
We live in a representative democracy and, as the name suggests, MPs should represent their constituent’s concerns in Parliament. Contacting your MP is one way to draw attention to campaigns and causes important for you, especially when you require action from the UK Government. Once they are aware of your cause or situation they can scrutinise the Government through questions, meetings, and suggesting policy changes. Ultimately, our MPs vote on legislation, making them aware of how you want them to vote as a constituent, might sway them to vote that way.

Dear [insert your MP’s full name],
I am a constituent of yours, and am getting in touch to ask you to support me in demanding that the government takes further action on the proposed Energy Bill.
I am gravely concerned about this bill and the impact it could have on our environment and energy bills.
The Energy Bill as it stands currently is missing huge opportunities to bring down our bills, improve energy efficiency and invest in cheap, renewable sources like onshore wind and solar. In its current form, the bill also doesn’t prevent vulnerable households from being forced onto prepayment meters or being disconnected from heating and electricity.
As my local Member of Parliament, I’m asking that you attend parliamentary debates on the Energy Bill and support priority amendments on the following points:
– Put an end to cold, damp homes for the most vulnerable by raising minimum energy efficiency standards of private rented sector homes;
– Stop energy firms from forcibly transferring people onto expensive pre-payment meters (PPMs) by banning the forced movement to PPMs;
– Get renewables onto the grid by changing Ofgem’s remit to include net zero;
– Stop more energy price rises by removing the hydrogen levy from consumer bills.
You can ensure that all your constituents can keep warm this, and every winter as well as support the creation of skilled jobs and growth in the energy sector, by attending the debates on this bill and supporting the above proposed priority amendments.
The Energy Bill and its scheduled amendments mark a critical time to push for policies and investments that will protect communities from rising energy costs this winter and in the years to come.
As my elected representative, please will you advocate for these changes to the Energy Bill?
Yours sincerely,
